The Chong Hua Hospital Endoscopy unit with its state-of the art facilities and competent staff offers a full range of diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures that cater to the needs our patients. These special investigations of the digestive system include upper GI endoscopy, duodenoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy, and colonoscopy. We also offer specialized procedures such as endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), polypectomy, endoscopic dilation which depends on specific indications.
Upper GI endoscopy or gastroscopy is indicated for difficulty in swallowing, dyspepsia, heartburn, abdominal pain, regurgitation, or hematemesis. While flexible sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy is indicated for changes in bowel pattern, abdominal pain, unexplained anemia, or the presence of bloody or tarry stool among other symptoms. Furthermore, colonoscopy is advised for average-risk individuals without symptoms as part of screening for colon cancer. It is best to check with your gastroenterologist for a complete evaluation prior to the procedure.
Our unit has 2 towers with 4 gastroscopes, 3 colonoscopes and 1 duodenoscope. We follow international protocols for the disinfection and sterilization of our equipment to ensure the safety of our patients.
A standard endoscopy starts with patient care and instruction at least a day prior to the scheduled procedure where he is advised with specific diet and bowel preparation. Upon arrival at the unit, the patient is assisted by highly trained nurses who will conduct routine interview and prepare the patient at the assigned room.

Upper Gastrointestinal Procedures These procedures examine the esophagus, stomach, and upper small intestine to diagnose and treat various conditions. Gastroscopy (EGD) – Typically takes 5–10 minutes, but may last 30 minutes to 1 hour in complex cases. Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) – Used to examine the bile ducts and pancreas. Due to its complexity, hospital admission is required. Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy (PEG) Insertion – A feeding tube is placed directly into the stomach. The time required depends on the patient’s condition. PEG Replacement / Removal – The duration varies depending on case complexity. Esophageal Dilatation – Used to widen a narrowed esophagus to improve swallowing. Time depends on the patient’s needs. Rubber Band Ligation of Esophageal Varices – A procedure to treat and prevent bleeding from enlarged veins in the esophagus. Injection Sclerotherapy – Used to manage bleeding in the digestive tract. Scheduling: Clinic doctors or your attending physician will coordinate with the Endoscopy Unit for appointment scheduling. Pre-Procedure Consultation: A doctor’s consultation is required before undergoing any endoscopic procedure. The schedule must be mutually agreed upon by both the patient and the performing doctor. Strictly by Appointment: Walk-in patients are NOT allowed. All procedures must be scheduled in advance.
Endoscopy Results Result Claiming: Results can be claimed after completing the billing process. Please present the official receipt or charge slip with an “Approved” stamp at the Endoscopy reception area. Digital Access: Results can also be viewed online via the PXI portal by following these steps: Visit https://chi.chonghua.com.ph/login Log in using patient credentials. Navigate to the Results section and select the procedure. Download or view the report as needed. Biopsy Results Claiming of Results: Histopathology results are available 7–10 working days after the procedure and can be claimed at the Histopathology Office. No Online Access: Biopsy results are not available on the CHi App. Claiming via a Representative: If someone else is claiming the result on behalf of the patient, they must present: A signed authorization letter from the patient. A valid ID of the patient. A valid ID of the representative. Request for Email Delivery: Patients who prefer to receive results via email must visit the Histopathology Office on the day of the procedure to: Sign a consent form. Provide the necessary details for email delivery.
Fasting Guidelines for Endoscopic Procedures Gastroscopy Procedures: Must undergo total fasting for at least 6–8 hours before the procedure. Colonoscopy Procedures: Requires 6–8 hours of total fasting, along with laxative intake the night before, as prescribed by the doctor during consultation. Extended Fasting: If fasting exceeds 8 hours, the patient will still be accommodated. Definition of Total Fasting: No food and no water intake during the fasting period. For further instructions, please consult a doctor.
General Requirements: Doctor’s Request/Prescription: If the consultation was conducted online, a clear photo of the doctor’s prescription may be presented to the staff. PhilHealth ID or Member’s Data Record: If unavailable, a photo of the ID or PhilHealth number will be accepted. For Patients with Insurance: Letter of Authorization (LOA): Ensure the correct hospital name (Chong Hua Hospital Fuente or Chong Hua Hospital Mandaue) is indicated. Validity & PhilHealth Requirements: Confirm the validity date and any required PhilHealth documents for coverage. Insurance Coverage Verification: Check with the insurance provider if they can provide a statement of non-covered items and clarify any coverage limits for the procedure. LOA Processing: Obtain an LOA at the HMO office (Ground Floor, Building A/B) at least one day before the scheduled procedure. Additional Requirements (if applicable): PWD Patients: Present a valid PWD ID. Senior Citizens: Present a valid Senior Citizen ID. Cardiology Clearance: Required if deemed necessary by the doctor.
In-patients: A swab test is NOT required unless specifically requested by the attending physician. Out-patients: A swab test is NOT needed unless deemed necessary by the attending physician.
Pre-Procedure Reminders Personal Items: Bring a black pen for signing documents during the assessment. Remove nail polish and gel accessories from both hands. Jewelry, accessories, and dentures must be removed before the procedure. Assistance & Recovery: An able-bodied adult must accompany you on the day of your procedure, as dizziness may occur after recovery. Do NOT drive after the procedure.

Important LOA Checks: The specific procedure listed in the LOA must match the written prescription. The hospital site/location (CHH Cebu or CHH Mandaue) must be clearly specified. PhilHealth Coverage: The total hospital bill will be adjusted based on the PhilHealth case rate, depending on the specific diagnosis.
